Success Psychology: A Test of the Will

Success Psychology

Can we train our psychology to be predisposed to success? What is success psychology and how does the psychology of success play in our chances of reaching our goals? This has been the subject of many business leaders to discovery the psychology of success and failure. Over time we have are getting closer to answers to success psychology and it’s role in success

The idea that we can just adapt a certain psychology and obtain success is a bit exaggerated because obtaining success isn’t just a quick change of mindset. But supposing that it is possible, it’s not easy.

For example, running a marathon is a relatively simple process but it is far from easy. Not everyone has the mental makeup to run a marathon although physically it is withing the realm of possibility for most people.

Today we have many positive self help books like The Secret which hold an element of truth in them. We agree that gratitude, being positive and aware, doing what you love, living with intention, and visualisation are important tools.

But its not as easy as it sounds.  This is only the “sparkly and shiny” parts of psychology of success.

What Is Success Psychology

In the real world psychology of success and failure is interrelated and not so fun.

In this article we are going to examine and look what is success psychology and the non sexy part of success.

But before we get into details its also important to note that success in one area of life won’t neccessarily make you happy. In fact, it most certainly will not. Happiness and success are not to be confused. But thats for another article. You can check it out here:

Choosing the right project

If you want to succeed at something you have to make sure the thing you are going after is the right opportunity for you. This is such an important first step that at times it can be very difficult to evaluate.

For your project to be the right one it should have potential and something you can work on for the long run. Don’t expect overnight success, its a process.

Success psychology and it’s role in success and failure;

The right project should stretch your competencies so that even if you fail, your abilities and knowledge will expand making you more attractive for other future opportunities. In this way the psychology of success and failure is intertwined.

Psychology Of Success

At what point in your project does the money start coming in and what might this look like in terms of creating a stable opportunity? If you are looking for financial success then there should be the possibility of making money at some point from your idea.

Assuming you aren’t at the university or learning as a unpaid internship for future opportunities, you will need to identify a situation where you can benifit financially from goods or services being sold whether they be yours or someone elses.

The main thing in success psychology is that your plan should benefit you whatever happens; even if the project fails. Success often comes after numerous failed attempts. The learning is in the experience. Keep this in mind with your project and build upon expanding your abilities and opportunities.

The value of Persevering on the project

If your project has a short deadline then you won’t be able to grow too much because it takes time to develop real strength in any area. The longer you stay and grow in an area generally the better your chances become. This is a basic part of the psychology of success

Imagine applying for a job after having developed your competencies for years. You will be a much more impressive candidate then someone who just decided last week that they want the same job.

The more time you commit to developing yourself the closer you approach that end result.

Understanding and leveraging our strengths and our role

Ok, so you have identified your project and you are ready to pursue it for the long term. Great, this is already a big advantage. But for things to run as smoothly as possible we need to consider how our personal strengths will best be leveraged as we attack those objectives.

Knowing yourself and your strengths can not be overestimated. We live in a very competitive world and there are many people who are enormously talented.

You need to know your unique mix of talents and leverage as many of them as possible as you strategically construct your approach. The better you manage and utilise your special personal strengths the more you will be able to stand out from the crowd and competition.

You can know what your strengths are by;

    • Doing what comes easy to you
    • Reflecting on past successes that you have had.
    • Using your past experiences and education at every chance you can.
    • Asking your friends what makes you different
    • Being honest about what your weaknesses and limitations are.

Managing versus outsourcing weaknesses

Although we need to focus on our strengths to gain the upper hand, we also need to make sure that our greatest weaknesses do not cripple us.

We should build primarily upon our strengths because it’s what makes us especially potent but our weaknesses sometimes need to be improved when they become a crutch to our progress.

Success

You could be one of the greatest inventors in histroy like Nicolas Tesla but still struggle greatly if you don’t develop business savy, communication skills, and your own personal weaknesses.

This is why becoming comfortable working outside your comfort zone is so crucial in the psychology of success . If you feel fear or anxiety or you just retract into our shell when things become stressful or painful then you will severly limit yourself.

Patience, an openess to learning, and the ability to manage stress are very important elements to becoming a balanced and reactive leader.

Building our strengths and learning how to prioritise the things we put our attention and focus on is paramount because we can’t learn everything at the same time. At times it is neccessary to hire people who fill in the holes in our weaknesses or experience.

Finding a team who best compliments your situation

We need to prioritise the things we are going to learn about because we can’t be an expert in every field. There just isn’t enough time in our life.

Whatever our vision for the future might be, we need to find people who can compliment and complete our strategy.

When hiring employees, contractors or even colleagues, we need to first look at the missing parts in our approach as we move forward.

Psychology

Some of the missing areas we can learn or improve upon ourselves with little effort; for other areas we need help.

For the tasks that will take us too much time to learn, we need to find someone who is already qualified in this area. In this way we can priortise the things that we oursource to other people.

Although we often oursource the hardest things that will occupy too much of our time, at times it pays to learn the most difficult things in function of it’s role in our overall plan. It just depends on the situation.

Whether we learn things ourselves or we hire someone else, in general we should have a good grasp on the subject before paying someone else to do it for us.

If we are completely ignorant on the subject it will be hard to evaluate the work we have hired out for and we can lose time or money due to ignorance on the subject.  Success psychology and it’s role in success and failure is like that.

In this way business leaders must have knowledge on many areas with at least an intermediate level of understanding of the various tasks performed within his or her company.

Keeping track of your people

Assuming you have people working for you and you possess a decent understanding of the work they are performing, you should also have ways to keep track of their work.

Because people generally have a tendency to do the minimum amount of work required of them, it’s important to have a general understanding of the quality of work that they do. You will need to be able to look at their work and determine how much work is being done and how good their work is.

This can be hard to do for non numerical types of jobs which can’t be counted or measured scientifically. For example, how do you measure customer service, communication, and company moral or influence of an employee?

With some consideration you should be able to develop systems that effectively gather some form of data concerning these questions.

Even for numerical data type work, are your numbers really advancing your project like you think? How do you measure your strategy? What false assumptions might you be making as to the effectiveness in your overall plan?

These are all serious questions as you invest in hiring your team. Nothing is sure and you never know before you start. Just do your homework with the new hire before starting the project to see how they communicate and how well they understand what their responsibilities and role will be in the project.

Psychology and it’s role in failure

Failure

Using Failure as a guide

Anytime you learn and apply new concepts you take a risk. This always the case and is a normal part of success psychology . You learn as you go.  Thats how success psychology and it’s role in success and failure operates.

Whether you are hiring someone new or try something new yourself, you need to understand the level of risk in the action you are taking.

Sometimes risk can be controled within your personal comfortable levels. Sometimes you need to take a jump that is crucial to you moving forward. All you can do is limit whatever amounts of risks you take the best you can.

When levels of risk become unavoidable and you are required to take a leap of faith outside your comfort level, first consider how important this particular action actually is in advancing forward. Sometimes you will find that finding another solution is the better plan.

At other times you will come to the realisation that this risk is vital and unavoidable and must be taken In circumstances like this you must put your thinking cap on and be as creative and open minded as possible to finding the best solution with the less risk.

Consider all the things that could go wrong before you take the risk. Before taking the action, do everything you can to protect yourself from as many of these things from happening as possible.

Also consider the benefits you might gain even in the even of you failing the project in question. For example, you might gain important data, valuable experience or any number of side benefits from taking the risk in question.

We need to understand our strengths and weaknesses and find the best team as we take the leader’s seat in managing risk within our businesses.
